Can I add more ESXi hosts to a Cluster that is licensed with VMware vSphere Standard (VVS)?

One of the customers is currently using VVS license for existing 3 x ESXi hosts and now want to expand the cluster by adding in one more ESXi host, however since the VVS license is no longer available – what are the options?

Facts First:

  1. VVS licensed host and VVF licensed host cannot be in same cluster.
  2. Can we buy VVS license now with some exception/special case? Since the existing VVS license is valid until for many years from now & need to add 4th node in the same cluster? -> Straight No!

What are the options?

  1. Having said the above facts, now customer can leave the current VVS cluster as is (cannot expand) and create a new cluster for the new ESXi host. However, since the MOQ of VVF is 72 Cores, customer will need to buy 72 cores, even if the host doesnt require so much.
  2. If customer really need the new host in same cluster, then customer must buy more VVF licenses, covering the existing VVS licensed hosts too. And can repurpose the VVS license for any other cluster.
